Bearing Testimony

We speak what we know and testify what we have seen. John 3:11

Sharing a testimony honors and glorifies the Lord by bearing witness to others what He has done in your own life. Non-believers can reject the message of the gospel truth but it’s pretty hard to argue with someone’s personal experience of God’s grace. And when we share our story with other believers, it strengthens and revitalizes us as we are reminded that God is alive; and He is at work all around us!

One evening, just this past September, I was invited to give my testimony to our church. It was the first time I had ever been asked to do this and I was a little nervous, but I said yes. To put even more pressure on me was the fact that Steve would be there and it would be his first time ever hearing a testimony. It’s funny, I wasn’t as afraid to share my story with a room full of people I didn’t know very well, but to share my story (which was a bit of Steve’s story too) with him there, was a little unsettling. I only had a few days to prepare which was probably good; this gave me only a “few days” to obsess about it.

Bear testimony to me. I will give you words and wisdom. Luke 21:13,15

The Holy Spirit quickly calmed me down and assured me that He would be doing the talking but still I felt anxious. What if I couldn’t give over the control and instead allowed my head to do the talking? What if I froze and couldn’t recall my story or speak it? I knew the Holy Spirit was right there with me, urging me to let go and let Him lead me. Each morning, He’d bring me to a Scripture that was completely relevant to what I was preparing for, and I wrote each one of them down. With the Holy Spirit’s help, I wrapped my prayer around God’s Word and prayed them right back to the Father, claiming the promises He laid out for me.

May they speak to you in a way that would encourage you to see what God’s precious word says to you. May you find the courage to share your story, the story of how God has changed your life, placing the lamp on a lampstand for all to see, giving glory to God.

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

Dear Heavenly Father,

I know it is my duty to share my story with others, to encourage, inspire, and most importantly to give glory to You, Lord for all you have done and continue to do in my life. As I share my testimony with our church, won’t You pour Your grace upon my lips and bless me; fill me with words to gracefully bear witness to what the Son of God has done in my life and in those I love. May I never hesitate to share with others, the hope, joy, and light which fills me to overflowing with Your unconditional love and forgiveness.

Father bless me with wisdom and words to recall what you have done for me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, for Your glory and the glory of Christ. Thank You Father for the gift of eternal life through Your Son, Jesus Christ.

He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself. And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life and this life in His Son. 1 John 5:10

Thank You Father for hearing my prayers, for giving me confidence and courage to walk forward in faith, and not by sight. Bless me now with words and wisdom so I may bear testimony to You. May I speak passionately about all that You do and all that You are.

Grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever. Psalm 45:2

Father as I trust You with all my heart to equip and bless me, I open my mouth knowing fully that You will give me the words and the timing. Thank you for Your faithfulness. Thank You for my new life in Christ, and for welcoming me into Your eternal kingdom. In Christ’s name I pray. Amen

I am the Lord your God, open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. Psalm 81:10
